Dia 1 - Londres - Ashford

Day 1 - London to Ashford

(On the departure day it was clear the anxiety printed on all  cyclists' faces and at 8:00 there we were in Chiswick Park, London, preparing our bikes, verifying the tires, chain oil, tools, filling our back pockets with the precious protein bars, energy gel gummies, extra inner tubes, as well as preparing our own gear for all type of situations.)

(The breakfeast table was ready and a bunch of colleagues came down to the meeting room to tell us farewell and wish the best of lucks so it all went perfectly.)

(After a million of typical photos, arround 10:00 we started our journey slowly. The group of 21 cyclists perfectly dressed for the occasion with Genworth's jerseys was impressive and most certanly made some heads turn along the way.

Leaving London took almost 2 hours, due to traffic, headlights, and some punctures and also because we passed near Buckingham Palace in the exact moment that the change of guards was happening and what an exciting moment it was when we realized we were cycling alongside the Queen's soldiers on their valient steeds.)
(After crossing Trafalgar Square on foot (the traffic arround the square made it unsafe to cross it on the bike), the high point of crossing London was to see the Tower of London and cycling on the London Bridge. It was absolutely amazing.

(After some effort and the first elevation of the day, we finally reached the Greenwich top where we were compensated with an amazing view over the whole London city. A few meters after there were our support vehicles for the first stop of the day on the grass fields of Blackheath, where our angels on the road expected us with a table full of wonderful treats perfect for very hungry cyclists.)

(The Lunch stop was a bit difficult to find and we ended up climbing twice the same hill, once before lunch to increase the hunger and another after to burn the calories. Once found the rendezvous point with our road angels, there they were the deliteful specialities prepared specially for us.)

(Being only the first day of such a long journey that demands so much from each one’s physical conditions, which are always very different and depending on countless factors, the group was still trying to find its own rhythm and it was tricky to maintain everyone together until the end of day and so we reached the hotel gradually.

In my particular case I had an additional adventur on that day. Due to just a brief moment of distraction I couldn’t keep up with the group that cycled in front of me. The GPS had already given up, because the battery had not been fully charged.

Ended up reaching a roundabout without knowing exactly where I should turn to. In fact, I had heard Frances Eason (one of our road angels) tell us that we should go to somewhere called Eureka, but when I saw the road sign it was too late and I was already going the wrong way cycling to Ashford center.

Tried to remain calm and continued until I found another roundabout where it was possible to turn back and follow the road signs to Eureka. Reaching Eureka’s Park went to the first hotel I saw and call to know where I should go and just after 5 minutes I had finished my first day arround 19:30. As soon as I entered the hotel and they told me that I could take the bike to my room I felt totally relaxed about the safety of my faithful companion.)

We had dinner close to the hotel in a place called Nando's, where the special was the famous portuguese grilled chicken. Even the napkins had the Barcelos rooster (very typical symbol in Portugal). The perfect end for a first day of 127kms.
